Burgoo in Vancouver

I was lucky enough to make a trip to Vancouver BC this summer during an uncommonly hot week in the northwest. I grew up in Portland, Oregon, but until a couple weeks ago had never been to Vancouver. I guess I always wanted to go south when I had the chance to travel, chasing after some sunshine. Now making my home in Spain, I have plenty of sunny days, so my recent break in the northwest was a green and leafy treat I relished in.

Not knowing the city well, I booked a hotel in North Vancouver, which is a short seabus ride away from central downtown. At first I wasn’t sure if I had made the right choice, but after checking out the market on the Lonsdale Quay and the many hip restaurants on Lonsdale Avenue, I was convinced some good travel karma had paid off. The Lonsdale Quay market is packed with food stands offering up every type of cuisine imaginable, and my best meal in Vancouver was had on Lonsdale Avenue at Burgoo.

Burgoo serves what they call ‘food for comfort’ and what I would call ‘darn good eats’. They’ve got an internationally inspired menu plus a full bar and craft beers on tap. Every night they’ve got a special on alcohol, whether it be $5.00 mojitos or pints. I had a local beer along with a bowl of their crab bisque and a simple salad with quinoa on top. I wasn’t that impressed with their desserts, so I skipped it. As a rule I don’t go to the same restaurant twice when I’m traveling so that I can try a wide variety of eats. However, I wanted to go back to Burgoo, and would have if it had worked out with my schedule. A good price, casual ambiance, and a very high quality product make this restaurant one to look for.
